Peace Bridge Expansion Plan is a grave health issue made WORSE!
“Diesel exhaust may be the single most severe air pollution threat to people’s health in heavily-populated urban areas across the country” —Conrad Schneider, Clean Air Task Force
how would you feel if this was YOUR child?
Jamson S. Lwebuga-Mukasa MD, PHD, Epidemiologist,
studied asthma incidence among Buffalo children.
Mukasa found the overall prevalence of asthma along the Peace Bridge traffic corridor
to be three times higher than the national average.
According to the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH)
Lung and bronchial cancer rates in the Peace Bridge expansion area are
• 50-100% above expected norm in middle-aged males
• 15-49% above expected norm In middle-aged females
The Impact of Respiratory Illness in our Community and within our Health System
• Almost 22,000 West Side residents have respiratory illness.
• That’s three times higher than in other districts of Buffalo.
• Public health costs to region—at least $70 million a year.
The West Side has the youngest population in Buffalo, including 25,000 children under 18
The Public Bridge Authority
acknowledges that diesel exhaust and its byproducts are “likely to be carcinogenic to humans.”
They know the deadly emissions of the 1.4 million trucks
that use this crossing annually are sickening West Side residents.
They admit to polluting the air children breathe.
So what measures have they taken to meaningfully reduce the negative health impact? NONE!
